The new ANSI Z359.1-2007 standard significantly changes the specifications for fall protection hardware. The new standard requires that hooks and carabiners be much stronger than what was previously acceptable.
In the past snap hooks have been required to withstand a side load of only 350 lbs-this can be easily exceeded in a fall where the hook is improperly loaded. ANSI Z359.1 specifies a load of 3,600 lbs, over ten times greater!
We view this new standard as a monumental step forward, creating increased safety in the work place. Although the new carabiners, hooks and lanyards do cost more, we consider it an insignificant price to pay for the benefit of saving lives.
